The Rituals of Royal Mourning in Marwar

Author(s) Ms. Aditi Jaiswal, Prof. Dr. Alpana Dubhashe
Country India
Abstract The mourning in Marwar represents far more than funeral ceremonies; it was a well-balanced and structured institution which reinforced dynastic continuity, political legitimacy and collective memory. This paper studies the ceremonies, rituals, and commemorative practices of the royal family with specific emphasis on the role of kingship, gender, hierarchy and memory process. The paper also analyses the participation of women and the wider society in mourning, highlighting the disparate nature of memorialization in the royal family. The paper argues the mourning in royal family acted as a political and cultural process through which dynastic sovereignty was preserved beyond death. By shifting attention from visual architectural memorial, this study contributes into deeper understanding of the socio-cultural history of Marwar through narratives of rituals, memory and emotions.
