| Abstract | Social media has emerged as one of the most influential instruments of political communication in contemporary India. Platforms such as Facebook, WhatsApp, X (formerly Twitter), Instagram and YouTube are increasingly used by political parties, candidates and citizens to disseminate information, mobilise support and shape public opinion during elections. This paper examines the growing role of social media in shaping voting behaviour in India, with particular reference to the 2014, 2019 and 2024 Lok Sabha elections. It is argued that social media offers considerable opportunities for political engagement, including wider political awareness, direct leader-voter interaction, cost-effective campaigning and mobilisation of first-time and youth voters. At the same time, several challenges are identified, namely the spread of misinformation and fake news, the creation of echo chambers, deepening political polarisation, the digital divide, data privacy concerns and weak regulatory oversight. |
