From Despair to Flourishing: A Comparative Study of Bhagavad Gita Chapter 1 (Arjuna Viṣāda Yoga) and Positive Psychology

Author(s) Dr. Pankaj Bala
Country India
Abstract This paper examines the relationship between Bhagavad Gita Chapter 1 and Positive Psychology through a comparative and qualitative approach. It argues that Arjuna's despair reflects universal psychological experiences such as anxiety, moral conflict, emotional overwhelm, and decision paralysis. These experiences correspond to concepts explored in modern Positive Psychology, including resilience, emotional regulation, meaning-making, and post-adversity growth. While Positive Psychology provides scientifically validated frameworks for enhancing well-being, the Bhagavad Gita offers a holistic approach that integrates ethical responsibility, self-knowledge, and spiritual wisdom.
Keywords Bhagavad Gita, Arjuna Viṣāda Yoga, Positive Psychology, resilience, emotional regulation, flourishing, psychological well-being, anxiety, meaning in life. ________________________________________
