Country India
Abstract Bharatanatyam is one of India’s oldest and most distinguished classical dance traditions, renowned for its harmonious integration of music, rhythm, literature and expressive movement. Within this artistic framework, the accompanying orchestra plays an indispensable role, with each musician contributing to the seamless presentation of melody, rhythm and emotion. Among these accompanying instruments, the violin occupies a unique position because of its ability to reproduce the nuances of Carnatic music and respond to the expressive demands of dance. More than a melodic accompaniment, the violin functions as an expressive medium that enhances the dancer’s interpretation and contributes significantly to the overall aesthetic experience of Bharatanatyam.
This study examines the role of the violin from historical, musical and performance perspectives. It traces the evolution of the violin in Bharatanatyam, analyses its position within the accompanying orchestra and explores its contribution to musical expression throughout the Margam. Particular emphasis is placed on the violinist’s understanding of abhinaya and sanchari, highlighting the importance of artistic sensitivity, communication and performance practice. The study concludes that the violin is not merely an accompanying instrument but an essential artistic collaborator that bridges music, movement and emotion in Bharatanatyam.
