Drug Addiction Crisis in Jammu & Kashmir Socio-Economic Consequences and Prevention Strategies

| Abstract | Drug addiction is a very severe problem in the region of Jammu and Kashmir, which is affecting all aspects of the society. Over the past three decades, Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) has transitioned from a narcotics transit corridor into a severe consumer market, affecting approximately 1.35 million individuals—roughly 10% of the population, with over 90% belonging to the vulnerable 17–35 age group. Drugs have started breeding their own sub-culture, which has its own norms, values, behaviour and symbols. This problem deteriorates an individual's health and happiness of an individual, the family, the community and the society. Today, there is no part of the world that is free from the curse of drug trafficking and drug addiction. Drug addiction is not confined to a single person or region. Its number could be varied and found in any age, gender, ethnicity, social class or religion. As a matter of fact, the tentacles of drug addiction have spread world widely covering every country in the world. There are various factors like peer pressure, masses high aspirations, unemployment and changing societal order that are continuously enhancing this particular menace. Legal frameworks, including the NDPS Act, are increasingly utilized to dismantle trafficking infrastructure via property attachments and financial seizures. Countering this complex crisis requires a multi-faceted approach integrating enhanced border monitoring, automated pharmaceutical tracking, expanded harm-reduction and healthcare services and community-driven rehabilitation programs to safeguard youth and restore regional stability. The aims of review study the distinctive consequences behind the problem of drug addiction in Jammu and Kashmir which impacts the masses physically, psychologically, economically and socially. It also manifests some possible solutions that could be taken by family, community, friends and society to eradicate this problem. |
