Education as a Path to Freedom and Self-Discovery in Elena Ferrante’s My Brilliant Friend

Abstract In the first volume of the Neapolitan Quartet, My Brilliant Friend, Elena Ferrante explores in depth the themes of education, female identity, social class, friendship and the search for freedom. This article looks at education as a transforming agent in the lives of the two main characters, Elena Greco and Raffaella Cerullo (Lila). Both girls grow up in a poor neighborhood of post-war Naples and face social, economic and patriarchal restrictions limiting their opportunities. Thus, education becomes a way for them to challenge the limits imposed by their family, gender and social environment. Elena’s continuing formal education gives her intellectual growth, social mobility and ultimately the opportunity to become a writer. In contrast, Lila’s formal education is interrupted by socio-economic circumstances, while her exceptional intelligence and intellectual curiosity direct her toward the ways of self-education. Their Educational Experiences Differ and These Differences Reveal the Unequal Distribution of Educational Opportunities and the Complex Relationship Between Talent and Social Circumstances.
In My Brilliant Friend education is not just a way of acquiring academic knowledge or professional advancement, but also a process of consciousness, self-discovery and resistance. Thru reading, through language, through friendship, through intellectual curiosity Elena and Lila gradually acquire the power to question the social structures that shape their lives. At the same time, Ferrante demonstrates that education does not automatically remove class, gender, or psychological barriers. Ultimately, the novel presents education as an effective yet complex way leading to female empowerment, intellectual independence, and the construction of one’s individual identity.
