| Abstract | Digital banking has emerged as a transformative instrument for financial inclusion in India, particularly in the post-demonetization and post-COVID-19 era. This study investigates the interplay between financial inclusion, institutional trust, and social stability through the lens of digital banking adoption in Kanpur District, Uttar Pradesh. Using a mixed-method approach comprising structured surveys (n=320) across urban, peri-urban, and rural pockets of Kanpur, the research examines the determinants and barriers of digital banking uptake among diverse socio-economic groups. The findings indicate that institutional trust is a significant mediating variable between digital banking access and perceived social stability, particularly among low-income households and first-generation banking users. The study highlights that digital banking, when supported by robust regulatory frameworks and inclusive technological infrastructure, can substantially reduce economic inequalities and strengthen social cohesion. Qualitative evidence from twelve key informant interviews further indicates that trust is built relationally-through responsive grievance handling and trusted intermediaries-rather than through informational outreach alone. Policy recommendations are offered for financial institutions, regulators, and local governance bodies to accelerate equitable digital financial inclusion, with reference to recent regulatory developments including the Reserve Bank of India's Financial Inclusion Index and the Digital Lending Directions, 2025. |
