Issues and Challenges of Handloom and Handicraft Industry in Himachal Pradesh

Author(s) Dr. Krishan Kumar Negi
Country India
Abstract The handicraft and handloom industry occupies a significant place in the socio-economic and cultural landscape of India, providing employment to millions of artisans, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas. Despite its rich heritage and potential for inclusive growth, the sector faces numerous issues and challenges that hinder its sustainability and competitiveness in the modern economy. This research paper examines the major problems confronting the handicraft and handloom industry, including lack of access to finance, inadequate technological upgradation, scarcity of raw materials, low productivity, and the declining interest of younger generations in traditional crafts. The paper also emphasizes the need for comprehensive policy interventions, skill development programs, infrastructure support, and effective marketing strategies to revitalize the sector. By addressing these challenges, the handicraft and handloom industry can contribute more effectively to employment generation, cultural preservation, and sustainable economic development.
Keywords Key words: Handloom, handicraft, employment.
