Abstract The growing integration of rooftop photovoltaic (PV) systems in low-voltage distribution networks poses challenges for maintaining voltage quality, minimizing curtailment, and reducing stress on network assets. This study evaluates and compares three voltage regulation strategies: brute-force optimization-based on-load tap changer (OLTC) control, conventional Volt/VAR with active power curtailment, and a coordinated OLTC–Volt/VAR control scheme. The coordinated approach, which prioritizes global voltage centering through OLTC before engaging inverter-based Volt/VAR support, demonstrates superior performance across multiple indicators. It enhances voltage stability, reduces the frequency of tap operations, and improves PV utilization by lowering the need for curtailment. These results highlight the coordinated OLTC–Volt/VAR control as a practical and effective solution for enabling higher PV penetration while maintaining reliable and efficient distribution system operation.
