Abstract Abstract: The history of education in Cooch Behar cannot be understood exclusively through the initiatives of the ruling house or the colonial administration; it also needs to be examined in relation to the changing structure of landed society and the emergence of locally influential groups. Among these groups, the Jotedars occupied a significant position in the agrarian and socio-economic structure of the princely state. The Jotedars were revenue-paying landholders situated immediately below the ruler in the hierarchy of land tenure, and their hereditary and transferable rights over jotes provided them with a degree of economic security and local influence. This article examines the relationship between the Jotedar class and the development of education in Cooch Behar from a historical perspective, with particular emphasis on the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It argues that the educational transformation of Cooch Behar was primarily driven by royal patronage, colonial administrative intervention, and the activities of educated professionals; nevertheless, the growth of the Jotedar and landed middle groups created a socio-economic environment in which education became an increasingly important instrument of social mobility, prestige and local leadership. The article further explores the indirect and, in some cases, direct participation of locally affluent landed groups in educational and socio-cultural activities, while also highlighting the limitations imposed by agrarian inequality, sub-infeudation, caste and class distinctions.
Keywords Keywords: Cooch Behar, Jotedar, Education, Landed Society, Royal Patronage, Social Mobility, Local Leadership, Princely State, Colonial Modernity.
