The Influence of Artificial Aging on the Color Stability of Light Cure and Dual Cure Luting Cement

Abstract Background: The long-term esthetic success of ceramic laminate veneer restorations largely depends on the color stability of the resin luting cement used for their cementation. Because ceramic veneers are thin and highly translucent, any discoloration of the underlying luting cement may become visible over time and compromise the final appearance of the restoration. Several factors, including the composition of the resin matrix, the type of polymerization, and water-related degradation, can influence the color stability of resin luting cements.
Aim: This in-vitro study was conducted to evaluate and compare the color stability of light-cure and dual-cure resin luting cements used for ceramic laminate veneer restorations after artificial aging in distilled water.
Material and Method: A total of 60 CAD/CAM-fabricated zirconia specimens measuring 10 × 10 mm with a thickness of 0.5 mm were prepared and equally distributed into three groups (n = 20). Group A was luted with Variolink N LC (Ivoclar), Group B with Fusion i-Seal (Prevest DenPro), and Group C with Fusion Ultra D/C (Prevest DenPro). Initial color measurements were obtained using a spectrophotometer based on the CIE L*a*b* color system. The specimens were then subjected to artificial aging by immersion in distilled water at 37°C for 30 days. After aging, color measurements were repeated, and the color difference (ΔE) was calculated. Statistical analysis included the paired t-test for intragroup comparisons and one-way ANOVA followed by Tukey's post hoc test for intergroup analysis.
Results: Artificial aging produced a statistically significant color change in all three groups. The lowest mean color difference was observed in Group A (ΔE = 4.42 ± 0.73), followed by Group B (ΔE = 6.22 ± 0.91). Group C exhibited the greatest color change (ΔE = 13.86 ± 1.09). Intergroup comparison demonstrated a highly significant difference among the three resin cements (p < 0.001).
Conclusion: Within the limitations of this in-vitro investigation, light-cure resin luting cements showed significantly better color stability than the dual-cure resin luting cement after artificial aging. These findings suggest that light-cure resin cements are a more suitable choice for ceramic laminate veneer restorations when long-term esthetic color stability is a primary clinical concern.
