| Abstract | The history of animal welfare in colonial India has often been studied through legislation, religious reform, veterinary institutions, and the activities of urban voluntary organisations. This article examines a more specific and less studied dimension: the relationship between the Mysore court and the Bangalore Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) during the early twentieth century. Based primarily on a 93-page archival compilation containing correspondence, annual reports, rules, financial statements, and administrative notes relating to donations and animal-welfare activities, the study traces the development of the Society and the changing form of Maharaja Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV’s support. |
