Architectural Vulnerability, Academic Disruption, and Institutional Adaptation: Analyzing the Impact of Extreme Heatwaves on European Educational Infrastructure

| Abstract | Anthropogenic climate change has accelerated the frequency, intensity, and overall duration of summer heatwaves across the European continent (European Environment Agency, 2023). Historically characterized by temperate climates, European educational infrastructure—particularly public school buildings—was structurally designed and engineered mainly to maximize solar gain and retain heat during cold winters. This paper investigates the multi-dimensional crisis precipitated by extreme summer temperatures within European primary, secondary, and higher educational institutions. Focusing on the critical deficit in mechanical cooling systems and air conditioning (AC), the present study synthesizes recent operational disruptions, including mass school closures, abbreviated schedules, and compromised examination integrity (Open Access Government, 2026; RTL, 2026). Furthermore, it examines the physiological and cognitive impacts of elevated classroom temperatures on students and teaching staff, highlighting an emerging equity gap in educational outcomes (Dunlop, Diepen, & Hudson, 2026). Finally, the paper evaluates contemporary policy debates surrounding academic calendar restructuring and the tension between active mechanical cooling and passive "green" architectural retrofits (Dawkins, Brown, & Bernie, 2024; European Environment Agency, 2022). It argues that a failure to systematically adapt educational spaces threatens both public health and long-term academic progress across the continent. |
