Three-Dimensional Insights into an Odontogenic Tumor: CBCT Evaluation of a Right Mandibular Ameloblastoma

| Abstract | Background: Ameloblastoma is a benign but locally aggressive odontogenic tumor with progressive growth and a significant risk of recurrence. Although panoramic radiography is widely used for initial assessment, cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) provides superior three-dimensional visualization of lesion extent, internal architecture, cortical integrity, and adjacent anatomical structures. Case Presentation: A 41-year-old woman presented with a gradually enlarging swelling in the right posterior mandible, first noticed 5–6 months earlier. The lesion was largely asymptomatic, with mild intermittent pain for 2–3 days before presentation. CBCT revealed an extensive multilocular radiolucent lesion involving the right mandibular body, angle, and ramus. The lesion demonstrated well-defined internal septations, pronounced cortical expansion, marked thinning, and focal cortical discontinuity. Based on these characteristic imaging findings, a provisional diagnosis of ameloblastoma was established. Surgical management was advised, followed by prosthetic rehabilitation and long-term follow-up. Conclusion: CBCT enabled comprehensive three-dimensional characterization of the lesion and clearly demonstrated its extent and cortical involvement. This information was valuable for diagnostic assessment and preoperative planning. Clinical Significance: This case highlights the important role of CBCT in identifying and characterizing extensive mandibular ameloblastoma, facilitating accurate assessment of lesion morphology and supporting appropriate treatment planning. |
