From Seclusion to Participation: Reform, Education, and Social Change

Abstract	This article repositions Muslim women, particularly Waheed Jahan, as active agents of late-colonial reform. It argues that through print culture and public debate, they negotiated domesticity, purdah, kinship, and familial authority while expanding women's intellectual and social presence. Rather than measuring their agency against Western ideals of individual emancipation, the article situates their interventions within the historical and cultural conditions that shaped their choices. Recovering these voices is therefore essential to a more nuanced understanding of gender, reform, and social transformation in late-colonial India.
