Abstract	Relief sculpture is a key visual element of Indian temple architecture, serving not only as architectural ornamentation but also as a medium for conveying religious, cultural and cosmological meanings. In Himalayan temple traditions, particularly in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand, the symbolic significance of relief carvings remains comparatively underexplored. This study examines the relief symbolism of the Gopinath temple at Gopeshwar, Uttarakhand, with particular emphasis on its relationship with regional cultural identity and broader Indian temple traditions. Adopting a qualitative, interpretive case-study approach, the research draws on primary data collected through field visits, direct observation, photographic and visual documentation, and informal discussions, complemented by secondary sources, including books, scholarly literature, archival records and field studies. The relief carvings are examined through visual, iconographic, comparative and contextual analyses. The study identifies a range of sculptural motifs, including representations of deities, narrative elements, floral motifs and geometric patterns, and interprets their symbolic functions within the temple’s architectural context. The findings indicate that these reliefs extend beyond decorative purposes and serve as a unified visual language that expresses religious narratives, ritual meanings, cosmological ideas, and aspects of the regional cultural identity of Garhwal. This study demonstrates the interrelationship of architecture, sculpture, local traditions and cultural knowledge, establishing the Gopinath temple as an integrated symbolic system. This research contributes to the interpretive study of Himalayan temple art by highlighting relief sculpture as an important carrier of cultural memory, religious symbolism and regional identity.
