Gender Inequality among Building Construction Workers in Mumbai Suburbs: A Secondary Data Analysis

Abstract	The construction industry is regarded as one of the largest employment generation sectors in India, and it has a major role in infrastructure development and economic growth. Although women’s participation in the construction workforce has been on the rise, gender inequality persists through the gender pay gap, occupational segregation, lack of skill development, poor social security, and poor working conditions. Women construction workers are still largely in unskilled, informal jobs. This group is thus disproportionately exposed to economic insecurity and exploitation, a phenomenon considered particularly acute in fast-urbanising areas such as the Mumbai suburb. This study discusses the gender inequality among the building construction workers in the Mumbai suburbs based on secondary data collected from government reports, national surveys, international publications and peer-reviewed research.
