Humanism in the Works of Kuvempu: A Study of Vishwamanava Philosophy in Kannada Literature

Abstract Kuppali Venkatappa Puttappa (Kuvempu) is one of the foremost figures in modern Kannada literature and a pioneering advocate of humanistic thought in India. His literary works embody the philosophy of Vishwamanava (Universal Human), which promotes equality, compassion, social justice, and the transcendence of barriers such as caste, religion, language, and nationality. This philosophy emerged as a response to social divisions and reflects Kuvempu's vision of a harmonious and inclusive society. Through major works such as Sri Ramayana Darshanam, Malegalalli Madumagalu, Kanuru Heggadithi, and his poetry, Kuvempu emphasized the dignity of every individual and the necessity of universal brotherhood. His humanism draws inspiration from Indian philosophical traditions while incorporating modern democratic values and rational thinking. The present study examines the manifestation of humanistic ideals in Kuvempu's literary corpus and analyzes the relevance of his Vishwamanava philosophy in contemporary society. The article argues that Kuvempu's vision continues to provide a moral and intellectual framework for addressing issues of social inequality, communal conflict, and cultural fragmentation in the modern world. His concept of the Universal Human remains a significant contribution to both Kannada literature and global humanistic discourse.
