Introduction to Smart Agriculture: The Need for Transformation

Abstract	This chapter provides a detailed examination ofsmart irrigation and precision agriculturesystems with IoT-enabled sensors. Implementingsmart irrigation systems is crucial for water-useefficiency, as it severely reduces water consumption and contributes to SustainableDevelopment Goals (SDGs) under the UnitedNations, specifically Goal 6 and Target 6.4.The chapter introduces widespread issues in theimplementation of smart irrigation with a focus on India. It also introduces potential solutions tothese issues that can be easily implemented. Thechapter focuses on different types of sensorsinvolved in these fields and various types ofsmart irrigation and regular irrigation systems. The chapter then presents a few case studies onthe latest research conducted by others in thisfield. The chapter concludes by justifying theneed for smart irrigation in India and its greatpotential in combating water waste andimproving crop yields.
