Abstract Background: Insomnia is a common sleep disorder frequently precipitated and perpetuated by stress through cognitive and physiological hyperarousal. Simple naturopathic procedures such as hot foot immersion and eye mud pack may promote relaxation via thermal regulation, peripheral circulation, and reduction of sensory and mental strain.
Objectives: To evaluate the effect of combined hot foot immersion and eye mud pack on stress levels and sleep quality among individuals with stress-induced insomnia.
Materials and Methods: An interventional pre–post study was conducted on 10 participants (3 male, 7 female) aged 20–30 years with stress-induced insomnia. The intervention consisted of a hot foot immersion bath at 40–45°C for 10 minutes followed by an eye mud pack for 10 minutes, administered once daily for 10 days. Outcomes were assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), a stress assessment questionnaire, and a sleep diary before and after the intervention. Data were analysed using paired t-tests.
Results: Global PSQI score decreased significantly from 14.80 ± 1.32 to 11.90 ± 1.97 (mean difference 2.90; p = 0.00079). Stress score reduced from 71.80 ± 10.20 to 61.40 ± 8.22 (mean difference 10.40; p = 0.037). Sleep diary data showed reduced sleep-onset latency (42.8 to 35.0 min), increased total sleep duration (5.74 to 6.52 h), fewer nocturnal awakenings, and improved subjective sleep quality.
Conclusion: Hot foot immersion combined with eye mud pack is a safe, effective, low-cost, and non-invasive naturopathic intervention that significantly reduces stress and improves sleep quality in individuals with stress-induced insomnia. Larger controlled trials are recommended to confirm these findings.
