Globalization and Rural Livelihoods: A Sociological Review

Abstract Globalization has now become one of the major forces affecting rural societies across the globe. It has changed forms of agricultural production, employment practices, migration, communication, education, medicine and rural institutions. Globalization and economic liberalization processes in India have helped reform rural livelihoods with the connection of local economy with national and global markets along with the introduction of advanced technologies and different livelihood opportunities. However, the changes have introduced the new forms of inequalities, insecurity of income, environmental degradation and social exclusion. This writing is an analytical review of globalization and its effect on rural livelihood from a sociological perspective and is based on the analysis of important theories, up-to-date literature, and current state of rural life in India.
The research is totally based on secondary data as peer-reviewed articles, textbooks, government publications, and international organizations’ publications. The paper concludes that globalization cannot be considered only as an economic process but as a multifaceted social practice. This is due to the fact that it alters rural social structures, occupational roles, gender relations, and even the life of the community. Understanding globalization through a sociological lens is essential for designing equitable rural development strategies in contemporary India.
