A Hybrid Metaheuristic–Blockchain Smart Contract Framework for Secure Farmer-to-Consumer Transportation in Agri-Supply Chains

Abstract The transparency of the agricultural supply chain is limited, post-harvest losses are high, and settlement is delayed during transportation from the farmers to the consumers, with risks of data-integrity issues. This paper introduces a hybrid model of metaheuristic route optimization, IoT monitoring, and blockchain smart contracts. A Hybrid Particle Swarm Optimization–Genetic Algorithm (HPSO-GA) is used to solve the problems of vehicle assignment and delivery route optimization under the conditions of capacity, time window, cold chain constraints and perishability. The verifiable batch events are recorded by smart contracts, the escrowed payment is managed by smart contracts, the quality conditions are enforced by smart contracts, and the dispute is solved by smart contracts. High volume sensor data remains off-chain with only decision relevant hashes on-chain, maintaining integrity while being scalable. The architecture, process, optimization model, contract design, security analysis and a reproducible evaluation protocol with an illustrative results template are presented in this paper, presented by means of the system diagrams and comparative charts. The illustrative results show the hybrid approach can lead to lower routing cost, delivery time, and exposure of spoilage compared to single-strategy baselines with relatively small computation time.
