Changing Preferences: From Traditional Games to Modern Sports in Tamil Nadu

Abstract This study examines the shift from traditional games to modern sports in Tamil Nadu, exploring the economic, social, and cultural factors driving it. Using secondary data from government sources, Census reports, and national surveys spanning 2001–2026, the research employs both descriptive statistics and econometric analysis to understand participation patterns and their determinants. Results indicate that urbanisation, rising incomes, and infrastructure investments have significantly influenced sports preferences, with cricket, football, and badminton dominating participation at the expense of traditional games such as kabbadi variants, silambam, and pallanguzhi. The study constructs a sports preference index and estimates demand elasticities, showing that modern sports have income elasticities above unity, while traditional games show declining participation, particularly in urban areas. Policy implications suggest balanced investment strategies that preserve cultural heritage while supporting the development of competitive sports. The findings contribute to the cultural economics literature by demonstrating how rapid socio-economic transitions reshape leisure consumption patterns in developing economies.
