Performance Evaluation of Local Stone Waste Powder as a Partial Cement Replacement in Concrete under Cold-Region and Freeze–Thaw Conditions

Abstract The rapid growth of construction and stone-processing activities has resulted in the generation of considerable quantities of stone waste powder. Improper disposal of this fine waste can create environmental and land-management problems. At the same time, cement production is associated with significant consumption of natural resources and greenhouse-gas emissions. The partial replacement of cement with suitable stone waste powder therefore offers a potential approach toward more sustainable concrete production.

This study proposes an experimental investigation into the use of locally available stone waste powder as a partial replacement for cement in concrete intended for cold-region applications. Concrete mixtures will be prepared by replacing cement with stone waste powder at selected proportions of 0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20% by mass. The control and modified mixtures will be evaluated for workability, density, compressive strength, split tensile strength, water absorption, and ultrasonic pulse velocity. In addition, specimens will be subjected to controlled freeze–thaw exposure to assess changes in mechanical and durability performance. Strength retention, mass change, water absorption, and surface deterioration will be used to evaluate resistance to repeated freezing and thawing.

The study aims to determine an optimum replacement level at which local stone waste powder can provide acceptable concrete performance while reducing cement consumption and utilizing locally generated waste. The findings may contribute to the development of more sustainable concrete suitable for construction in cold and mountainous regions.
