Impact of Gig Economy Platforms on Urban Youth Employment Patterns in India

Author(s) Ms. Aditi Kadam
Country India
Abstract Gig-economy platforms have changed how urban workers access income by matching customers with drivers, delivery workers, service providers and other independent workers through digital platforms. This paper examines the impact of platform work on urban youth employment patterns in India, focusing on entry access, flexibility, income stability, benefits and career development. The paper argues that gig work is a labor-market model rather than simply another job category. Platforms can lower entry barriers and provide flexible income opportunities, but workers may face income volatility, limited employment benefits and algorithmic management. This topic is particularly relevant to Business AI because algorithms influence work allocation, incentives, routing and performance measurement. A primary survey is proposed to distinguish full-time platform-dependent workers from students and other part-time workers. The paper concludes that the long-term impact of gig work depends on whether platforms can combine flexibility with greater income predictability, worker protection and skill development.
