The Impact of Educational Programs on Inmate Rehabilitation in Kabwe District

Abstract	This study explores the impact of educational programmes on inmate rehabilitation in Kabwe District, Zambia. Guided by Social Learning Theory and Restorative Justice Theory, rehabilitation is conceptualized as behavioural, cognitive, and moral transformation. Findings reveal that participation in literacy, vocational, and moral instruction enhances discipline, emotional regulation, empathy, and self-worth, while fostering employability and reducing misconduct. However, systemic barriers such as inadequate resources, overcrowding, and shortages of qualified instructors limit programme effectiveness. The study concludes that correctional education should be institutionalized and adequately resourced as a core rehabilitative function within Zambia’s correctional system.
