Authoritarian Resurgence: Understanding the Retreat of Liberal Democracy in Contemporary Politics

Abstract The resurgence of authoritarianism in the twenty-first century marks a profound transformation in global politics, challenging the liberal democratic order that once appeared ascendant after the Cold War. This phenomenon—termed authoritarian resurgence—is characterized by the consolidation of power by strongmen leaders, manipulation of electoral systems, suppression of dissent, and erosion of institutional checks and balances. The retreat of liberal democracy is not confined to developing nations but has also surfaced within advanced democracies, where populism, nationalism, and digital authoritarianism are undermining democratic norms. Globalization’s uneven impact, rising economic inequality, the weaponization of social media, and declining public trust in institutions have collectively accelerated this democratic backsliding. Authoritarian regimes have adeptly adapted to modern governance tools, employing surveillance technology, disinformation, and state-controlled narratives to maintain legitimacy. The contemporary political landscape thus reflects a hybrid regime model—where democratic facades coexist with autocratic control. Understanding this retreat requires a multidimensional analysis encompassing political economy, technological governance, and international power realignments. The study concludes that safeguarding liberal democracy demands a renewed commitment to civic education, institutional integrity, and global cooperation to resist the entrenchment of authoritarian tendencies in the modern world.
