| Abstract | Youth social responsibility and self-awareness is a significant issue today. This study investigates the impact of six custom-designed posters (five “YOU ARE LUCKY” and one “I AM LUCKY” mirror poster) on perceptions of youth about social responsibility, which were displayed in a mental health exhibition in Puducherry, India, organised by the Trust for Youth and Child Leadership (TYCL). The posters were visually designed using Gestalt design principles (figure-ground, proximity, similarity and pragnanz) as a design methodology to ensure that the messages were emotionally resonant and easy to process. The “I AM LUCKY” mirror poster was designed to encourage adolescents to consider their own situation in a positive light and to show empathy for the situation of others, guided by the theoretical framework of the study, Self-Awareness Theory. The survey results of 115 students indicate that the posters were well received and that the students reported feeling grateful, self-realised and more willing to act responsibly towards others as a result of the posters. The results of this study indicate that the traditional visual communication tools, if designed carefully, are still valuable in promoting the social responsibility of youth. |
