The "Easy Money" Illusion and Academic Disinterest: Transnational Migration, Local Unemployment, and Educational Apathy among Youth in Poonch District of Jammu and Kashmir

Abstract This study investigates the growing phenomenon of educational disinterest among youth in the Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir. Grounded in the sociologies of education and migration, the paper explores a dual structural crisis: the pervasive reality of local educated unemployment contrasted with the immediate financial rewards of semi-skilled transnational labor in Gulf countries and local daily-wage work. Through the theoretical lenses of Pierre Bourdieu’s Habitus and Robert K. Merton’s Strain Theory, this research analyzes how the traditional value ascribed to academic credentials is systematically devalued. Methodologically, this paper utilizes a purposive and snowball sample of fifty (N = 50) youth respondents who have discontinued or dropped out of formal schooling across Mandi, Surankote, and Mendhar blocks, paired with an empirical survey of regional educators and professors (N = 8). The empirical data reveals how the normalization of manual transport and overseas labor creates an "easy money" illusion, leading to a "crisis of ambition" and structural school desertion. The paper concludes with specific policy recommendations to structurally realign education with meaningful local livelihood security and informal sector formalization in the Pir Panjal region.
