| Abstract | Climate change and global warming have significantly impacted the water cycle and water resources in the Himalayan region. This study focused on the effects of climate change and human intervention on water resources in the Ladakh region over the past decades. Changes in snowfall and glacial patterns, rapid runoff, and erratic rainfall due to changes in the snow season and an increase in temperature have resulted in water scarcity in this area. Primary and secondary data on groundwater status, temperature changes, precipitation, glacial retreat, and increased water demand were collected and analyzed. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the ecological, social, and economic impacts of climate change and identify the associated risks. A field survey was conducted using a questionnaire to collect primary data. The primary objective of this survey was to identify the available water resources, understand the issues leading to a decline in water sources, and assess groundwater overexploitation. It also aimed to capture community and stakeholder perceptions regarding water-related risks, evaluate the strategies and policies currently in place to address these challenges, and explore the approaches adopted to mitigate the impacts of climate change and rising temperatures in the region. This integrated approach provides a comprehensive understanding of water resource dynamics and vulnerabilities in the region. |
