Power Relations and Justice: An Interpretative Study of Selected Fairy Tales

| Abstract | Justice, a concept of ethics and political philosophy, has always been discussed and debated by philosophers, academics, and lawmakers. Despite thousands of years of discourse — from Greek antiquity to modernity, from East to West — the concept of justice remains as problematic and debatable as it was in the time of the Sophists. The question Michael J. Sandel asks, "What is the right thing to do?", is always fresh, and it continually unsettles our inherited understanding of justice. The fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm, however, offer a fabulous imaginative space and a literary landscape in which the dynamics of justice can be explored and the concept renewed. These stories transcend the normative boundaries of justice and stage it in ever-new scenarios in which its definitive concepts are constantly challenged. This paper explores such justice dynamics in the context of power relations, analysing selected fairy tales through the lens of justice, and shows how, in moving from philosophical discourse to literary analysis, power dynamics shape justice in fairy tales. |
