World’s Semiconductor Ecosystem: A Secondary Analysis of Challenges, Opportunities, and Strategic Pathways for Global Competitiveness

Author(s) Mr. Divij Garg
Country India
Abstract The semiconductor industry has emerged as a critical foundation of modern economies, technological innovation, national security, and defence capabilities. This study examines the global semiconductor ecosystem with particular emphasis on supply-chain vulnerabilities, geopolitical competition, critical-mineral dependencies, and India’s evolving strategic position. Using a secondary research methodology, the study analyses scholarly literature, industry reports, government publications, and policy documents to examine the structure of semiconductor value chains and the roles of major economies. The findings highlight that geographical concentration, dependence on specialised technologies and materials, trade restrictions, geopolitical tensions, and unexpected disruptions can significantly affect global semiconductor supply. The study further examines India’s strengths in semiconductor design and engineering, alongside challenges in fabrication, advanced manufacturing, critical materials, infrastructure, and skilled workforce development. It concludes that India should pursue strategic competitiveness rather than complete self-sufficiency through domestic capability-building, supply-chain diversification, international partnerships, technological development, and stronger semiconductor capabilities for strategic sectors.
