Abstract Technology investment decisions under uncertainty are poorly served by deterministic financial methods that undervalue flexibility and sequential information arrival. This narrative review synthesizes 30 studies published between 2020 and 2026 to examine how multi-scenario financial modeling techniques are applied to U.S. technology investment decision-making and what integrated understanding emerges regarding their capabilities, limitations, and practical value. The literature reveals structured pluralism, strong agreement on the value of contingent decision rights and sequential structure, alongside persistent differences in uncertainty representation, computational philosophy, and organizational applicability. Four contributions are advanced. First, fragmented literature is consolidated into a coherent account of the field. Second, an integrative classification differentiates techniques by assumptions, capabilities, and contextual suitability. Third, unresolved debates are translated into a focused research agenda. Fourth, evidence-informed principles guide technique selection according to uncertainty type, sequential structure, organizational capacity, and institutional context. Effective multi-scenario support depends on diagnostic alignment rather than universal preference for any single method.
Keywords multi-scenario financial modeling, real options analysis, technology investment, uncertainty, sequential decision-making, Monte Carlo simulation
