Abstract The handloom sector plays an important role in Kerala’s traditional and rural economy by supporting artisan livelihoods and preserving cultural heritage. Handloom cooperatives have traditionally contributed to production, marketing and the welfare of weavers. This study critically evaluates the working and performance of handloom cooperatives in Kerala during 2019–20 to 2024–25, focusing on loom capacity, production, sales turnover, employment and the number of weavers. Based on secondary data from government and academic sources, the study highlights declining loom capacity, weaver strength and sales turnover, along with fluctuations in production and employment. The findings emphasize the need for improved market access, product diversification, digital marketing, technology adoption and stronger institutional efficiency for the sustainable development of handloom cooperatives.
Keywords handloom; cooperative societies; weavers; production; sales turnover; employment; Kerala; non-credit cooperatives.
