| Abstract | China’s August 2025 launch of the Hotan–Shigatse railway project introduces profound geopolitical and strategic shifts along the Himalayan frontier. Spanning 2,000 kilometers through punishing, high-altitude terrain, this multi-billion RMB corridor defies conventional economic logic. Most planned stations sit in sparsely populated areas, and the project faces staggering engineering and environmental hurdles. This paper investigates why Beijing is committing immense resources to this challenging line, analyzing how the corridor serves China's long-term regional ambitions and exploring the direct, high-stakes implications for India’s national security. |
