Role of Digital Learning in Improving Academic Engagement among University Students: A Review

Digital learning has become an important component of higher education, providing university students with flexible access to learning resources, online communication, multimedia content, and interactive educational activities. The present review examines the role of digital learning in improving academic engagement among university students. The reviewed literature suggests that digital learning can enhance students' behavioral, cognitive, and emotional engagement by increasing accessibility, interaction, collaboration, learner autonomy, and opportunities for personalized learning. Online discussion forums, digital learning platforms, multimedia resources, virtual activities, and timely instructor feedback may encourage students to participate more actively and take greater responsibility for their learning. However, the effectiveness of digital learning depends on factors such as course design, teacher support, digital literacy, technological access, and students' motivation. Poorly designed online environments, limited interaction, technical difficulties, and unequal access to technology may reduce engagement. Overall, digital learning appears to have considerable potential to strengthen academic engagement when technology is integrated with appropriate pedagogy and meaningful student–teacher interaction. Further research is needed to examine long-term effects and identify effective digital-learning strategies across different university contexts.
