Challenges to Environmental Degradation and Their Mitigation: A Biological Perspective

| Abstract | Environmental degradation has become one of the most urgent concerns of the present time because it directly affects the natural systems that sustain life. Continuous pressure on land, water, forests, air, and biodiversity has disturbed ecological balance and weakened the relationship between living organisms and their environment. Human activities such as deforestation, industrial expansion, urbanization, overuse of fertilizers and pesticides, and improper waste disposal have accelerated environmental damage. From a biological point of view, this degradation is especially important because it influences ecosystems, species survival, microbial diversity, nutrient cycling, and food chains. The consequences are visible in the form of habitat loss, biodiversity decline, eutrophication, pollution, soil infertility, and climate-related disturbances. This chapter discusses the major challenges responsible for environmental degradation and examines them through a biological lens. It also highlights practical mitigation strategies such as afforestation, biodiversity conservation, sustainable agriculture, pollution control, bioremediation, phytoremediation, and environmental awareness. The chapter emphasizes that protecting the environment is ultimately linked with protecting the biological systems on which all life depends. |
