Latin American Currency Crises

Author(s) Prof. Dr. Sahibe Meral Cakici
Country Turkey
Abstract This study aims to provide a detailed explanation and a comparative analysis of the currency crises experienced by Argentina, Brazil and Mexico, which constitute the major traumatic economic events in the history of the Latin American region. Despite the fact that the main causes and the triggering factors of these crises were similar, the evolution, the policy responses as well as the impact and the outcome of the crises differed significantly across the three countries. Understanding the nature and the dynamics of these significant crises is crucial in order to be able to evaluate the economic outlook of emerging economies in international financial markets, which is critical for the stability of the global financial system.
