A Nutritional Lens on Psychological Health: Redefining Care for Cancer Warriors

| Abstract | Cancer is not something that affects only the body. For a patient, it can change almost every part of everyday life, including the way they eat, feel, see themselves, and cope with what is happening around them. Treatment can bring loss of appetite, changes in taste, fatigue, dietary restrictions, and changes in body image. At times, even eating can become difficult, frustrating, or emotionally loaded. At the same time, food can also become a small source of comfort, familiarity, strength, or control during a period when much of life feels uncertain. This research came from an interest in understanding that side of the cancer experience, the things patients may feel but may not always openly talk about. We wanted to look at nutrition not just as something that helps the body tolerate treatment, but also as something that can be connected to a person’s mood, self-esteem, coping, and overall psychological well-being. Through conversations with patients, personal reflections, and drawings, the study tried to understand their experiences in their own words and through their own forms of expression. At the heart of this research is a simple idea: cancer care should care for the person, not just the illness. By bringing nutrition and psychological support into the same conversation, we hope to encourage a more compassionate and complete approach to cancer care, one that recognises the emotional struggles, small victories, relationships, resilience, and everyday experiences that are also a part of healing. |
