NISHTHA: An Initiative for Teacher Professional Development in India

| Abstract | Abstract The National Initiative for School Heads’ and Teachers’ Holistic Advancement (NISHTHA) marks a major shift in how teacher professional development has been organised in India’s school education system. Launched in 2019 under Samagra Shiksha, it was conceived as an integrated, large-scale capacity-building programme to improve classroom practice, strengthen school leadership, and ultimately raise student learning outcomes. Its design brought together curriculum, pedagogy, assessment, inclusion, health and well-being, school leadership, and educational technology within a common professional-learning framework, rather than treating teacher training as a set of unrelated short programmes. The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated an important change in delivery, the program at elementary-stage moved from face-to-face training to online mode through DIKSHA in October 2020. The framework subsequently expanded into stage-specific versions addressing secondary education, foundational literacy and numeracy, and early childhood care and education. The present paper offers an overview of the program, its evolution from 1.0 to 4.0 versions, the structure and intent of the courses, the institutional arrangements for course development and delivery, and the monitoring and professional support mechanisms. The paper also considers later extensions reported by the Ministry of Education, showing that NISHTHA has continued to evolve beyond its original four-stage architecture. |
