Drone Delivery Viability: Navigating Regulatory, Payload, and Battery Limits for Automated Residential Drop-Offs

| Abstract | Last-mile delivery is under growing pressure from traffic gridlock, rising fuel costs, and strict carbon reduction targets. While cargo drones promise a fast, automated workaround to road congestion, their real-world success depends heavily on public trust and physical neighbourhood feasibility. This study examines how urban and semi-urban consumers view residential drone delivery, focusing on everyday practical concerns alongside perceived benefits. Using survey data gathered from a cross-section of residents (N = 203), the study evaluates consumer willingness to adopt drone logistics across key operational touchpoints: landing safety, physical drop-off constraints in high-rise buildings, privacy and noise anxieties, weather reliability, and extra delivery fees. The data shows strong demand for sub-30-minute turnarounds, particularly for medicines and grocery essentials. However, practical concerns remain high regarding direct-to-balcony drop-offs, mid-air collisions, and visual privacy in dense residential layouts. Hypothesis testing demonstrates that spatial bottlenecks and noise concerns are invariant across housing types, indicating that logistics companies must prioritize centralized neighbourhood landing stations and secure smart lockers over direct doorstep drops to achieve commercial scale. These takeaways offer a grounded roadmap for logistics operators, real estate developers, and policymakers working to make autonomous aerial delivery a viable reality. |
