Sustainable Tourism Development in Himachal Pradesh:a Case Study of Spiti Valley

Abstract Spiti Valley in Himachal Pradesh is a high-altitude, ecologically sensitive and culturally distinctive tourism destination. The growth of adventure, nature-based, cultural and community-oriented tourism has created opportunities for employment, local entrepreneurship and household income, while also increasing pressure on water resources, waste-management systems, transport infrastructure and the fragile Himalayan environment. This study examines sustainable tourism development in Spiti Valley with particular attention to its economic, environmental and socio-cultural dimensions. The study uses a descriptive research design and draws on primary responses collected through a structured questionnaire together with secondary material contained in the project report. The reported survey comprises 50 respondents and uses frequency and percentage analysis. The findings indicate that adventure tourism is a major motivation for visitation; homestays are the most preferred accommodation category; most respondents report positive tourism experiences; and 90% state that they would recommend Spiti Valley to others. At the same time, poor road connectivity (32%), harsh weather (24%) and water scarcity (20%) are identified as major challenges. The study argues, on the basis of the reported evidence, that future tourism development requires stronger waste management, attention to destination carrying capacity, eco-friendly accommodation, responsible tourist behaviour, improved public transport and stronger coordination among government agencies and local communities. The study is limited by its small, convenience-based sample and the descriptive nature of the analysis.
