ÉMORA: Emotional Mobility and the Role of Emotional Connection in Urban Electric Vehicle Design

| Abstract | The introduction of electric and autonomous mobility has repositioned the car as an increasingly intelligent and interactive form of transport, yet urban vehicles still focus more on efficiency and performance than on the human element inside them. This research explores the design of ÉMORA, a small urban electric vehicle built on the concept of "The Car That Cares," which treats emotional comfort and human connection as core aspects of mobility. Drawing on Donald Norman's theory of emotional design, the project examines exterior form, interior spatial organisation, seat movement and digital interaction. Key ideas include "Duality & Unity" in the interior, "Seats That Reunite" (seats that move together when the car is empty), "Two Spaces, One Emotional Connection," and Companion Mode, a digital feature for a vacant passenger seat. The findings suggest emotional design can shape a vehicle's spatial organisation, movement, interaction and overall experience, offering a new approach for future urban mobility. |
