Early identification and family-centred intervention for childhood communication disorders: A clinical review

Abstract Childhood communication disorders affect speech-sound production, language, fluency, voice and the functional use of communication. Their consequences may extend to literacy, classroom participation, social relationships and later educational achievement. This focused narrative review examines early developmental indicators, clinical red flags, major childhood communication disorders, risk factors, assessment principles and family-centred intervention. Evidence was synthesized from National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) resources, World Health Organization (WHO) guidance, professional practice resources and systematic reviews. The first three years of life are a particularly intensive period for speech and language development; however, developmental variation means that milestones should be interpreted as screening indicators rather than rigid diagnostic cut-offs. Persistent delay, poor comprehension, markedly reduced intelligibility, regression, abnormal voice quality, significant stuttering or concerns about hearing warrant professional evaluation. Effective management depends on differential diagnosis, hearing assessment when indicated, individualized speech-language therapy, caregiver participation and outcome monitoring. Early recognition is therefore best viewed as the starting point of a coordinated clinical and family pathway rather than as a diagnosis in itself.
