Factors Influencing Career Choice among High Schoolers

Author(s) Ms. Anahita Kapoor
Country India
Abstract Career choice is a significant decision for high school students, influenced by a complex interaction of personal, social, economic, and environmental factors. This paper examines the key factors shaping students’ career choices, including gender, parental influence, personality, peer pressure, socioeconomic status, societal expectations, and changing labour market demands. It also explores the challenges students face in making informed career decisions, particularly limited awareness of career opportunities, inadequate career counselling, disparities in access to resources, and the mismatch between individual interests and available opportunities. Drawing on existing research, the paper highlights the importance of aligning students’ interests, personality, and aspirations with realistic educational and career pathways while recognising the influence of external pressures and economic considerations. It proposes a comprehensive approach to career guidance through early career education, personalised counselling, greater parental involvement, improved access to resources, and stronger school-industry partnerships. By creating a supportive and informed decision-making environment, schools can better equip students to navigate changing career landscapes and make choices that are both personally meaningful and responsive to future opportunities.
