| Abstract | The evolution of Hindustānī classical music has been shaped by the continuous interaction between inherited tradition and creative innovation. Within this framework, the Gharānā system has played a crucial role in preserving distinctive approaches to rāga development, voice production, improvisation, rhythmic organisation, repertoire, and aesthetic values. The Rāmpur–Sahaswān Gharānā is particularly recognised for its emphasis on swara precision, bandish-centred exposition, articulate sargam, refined layakārī, full-throated voice production, and systematically organised tān structure. These traditional characteristics attained renewed artistic expression in the gāyakī of Ustad Rashid Khan (1966–2024), one of the foremost vocalists of contemporary Hindustānī classical music. This study explores Ustad Rashid Khan’s artistic individuality through the complementary concepts of structural synthesis and aesthetic modernity. Employing a qualitative, descriptive, analytical, interpretative, and case-study methodology, the research investigates how the inherited principles of the Rāmpur–Sahaswān Gharānā were internalised, selectively assimilated, and creatively transformed into a distinctive musical expression. Particular attention is devoted to vilambit badhat, swara-lagav, meend, gamak, voice culture, bandish, bol-based improvisation, sargam, layakārī, tān, and aesthetics. A detailed performance analysis of Rāga Bageshri further illustrates the practical manifestation of these musical principles. The study also evaluates his pedagogical philosophy, institutional contributions, cross-tradition collaborations, and wider cultural communication. The findings demonstrate that Ustad Rashid Khan achieved artistic individuality not by abandoning tradition but through its disciplined internalisation, selective assimilation, and creative reinterpretation. His gāyakī represents a balanced synthesis of technical excellence and emotional depth, establishing a significant model of continuity and innovation in contemporary Hindustānī classical music. |
