Religion Beyond Dogma: Reconstructing Gandhi’s Religious Philosophy for a Plural and Conflict-Ridden World.

Author(s) Dr. Rohit Kumar
Country India
Abstract This paper critically examines Mahatma Gandhi’s religious philosophy as an ethical, epistemological and political framework centred on Truth (Satya), Ahimsa (non-violence), conscience, self-discipline and service. It argues that Gandhi understood religion not primarily as institutional doctrine or ritual, but as an ethical quest for Truth and moral self-transformation. His recognition that all religions contain elements of truth, yet remain imperfect through human interpretation, provided the basis for a pluralism grounded in humility, mutual respect and dialogue. The paper further explores the relationship between Gandhian religion and secularism, particularly the distinction between personal faith and the secular, egalitarian character of the state. Finally, it examines the contemporary relevance of Gandhi’s thought amid religious intolerance, communal polarization and identity politics, arguing that his religious philosophy offers an ethical framework for reconciling religious conviction with pluralism, constitutional equality and democratic coexistence.
