Impact of Urbanization on Agricultural Land in Banda City: A Geographical Study

| Abstract | This research paper presents an in-depth analysis of the rapid urban expansion experienced by Banda city—a key administrative and commercial hub in the Bundelkhand region—over the past three decades, and the resulting multidimensional spatial, ecological, and socio-economic impacts on agricultural land. Urban development, uncontrolled horizontal sprawl, the diversification of residential areas, and the construction of new transport corridors have led to the large-scale conversion of highly fertile agricultural lands—characterized by *Kabar* and *Do-mat* (loam) soils—on the city's periphery into non-agricultural uses. The study employs an interdisciplinary approach integrating remote sensing, GIS-based land-use/land-cover analysis, and district statistical data. The findings reveal a massive 126.8 percent increase in Banda city's built-up area between 1991 and 2021, contrasted by a 34.6 percent contraction in net cultivable land. This unplanned transformation is not only destroying the local green belt that produces food grains and vegetables but is also a primary cause of the drastic decline in local groundwater levels and the dispossession of small and marginal farmers. Finally, the paper proposes a practical framework—incorporating scientific land-use zoning, vertical expansion policies, and the preservation of green corridors—to ensure future urban sustainability. |
