Ocular Drug Delivery System

Author(s) Ms. Ashila S, Mrs. Chaithanya A P
Country India
Abstract The development of ocular drug delivery systems (ODDS) remains a challenge due to the unique anatomy and physiology of the eye, which limit drug penetration and retention. Conventional systems such as eye drops and ointments suffer from low bioavailability, often less than 5%, due to precorneal loss, blinking, and nasolacrimal drainage. In recent years, novel delivery systems, including nanoparticles, in-situ gels, ocular inserts, and microneedles, have been developed to enhance drug residence time, penetration, and patient compliance. This review provides a detailed overview of ocular barriers, conventional and advanced delivery approaches, evaluation parameters, and future perspectives for improving ocular therapeutics.
