Abstract Abstract
The study identifies critical socio-technical and geographic challenges specific to the region, including limited technological infrastructure, uneven digital connectivity across hill districts, budget constraints, lack of specialized faculty training in digital sports technologies, and resistance to replacing traditional coaching methods. The integration of modern digital technologies under the framework of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 has necessitated a structural reorientation across higher education disciplines in India. Higher Physical Education (HPE)—comprising undergraduate (B.P.Ed.) and postgraduate (M.P.Ed.) degree programs—traditionally relies on hands-on instructional methods, yet it stands to benefit significantly from emerging technological tools. This study examines the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) within the HPE curriculum across public universities in Uttarakhand, focusing on identifying field-level opportunities, institutional challenges, and context-specific pedagogical strategies for effective implementation. Using a mixed-methods research design, empirical data was gathered through structured questionnaires and semi-structured interviews with university administrators, physical education faculty, and research scholars across major institutions in the region, including Kumaon University, Soban Singh Jeena University, Hemvati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University, and Sri Dev Suman Uttarakhand University. The findings indicate substantial opportunities, demonstrating that AI-powered applications—such as computer vision for movement and posture tracking, predictive biomechanics modelling, automated performance analytics, and individualized recovery planning—enhance practical training precision, literature synthesis, and objective assessment. However, the study highlights key challenges specific to Uttarakhand's socio-geographic context, including the digital divide between plain and remote hill campuses, inconsistent internet infrastructure, high equipment costs for smart sports laboratories, limited digital literacy among sports educators, and data privacy concerns. To bridge these operational gaps, the study presents actionable pedagogical strategies, including the deployment of lightweight, low-bandwidth mobile AI diagnostic applications, regular Faculty Development Programs (FDPs) on sports analytics, syllabus restructuring under NEP 2020, and strategic resource-sharing models across institutions. This study offers a practical roadmap for higher education policymakers and physical education faculties striving to implement digital technology within regional and mountainous educational frameworks.
